Susan Kano@Susan Educational Publishing Inventor/Author I am an author and manager with over 14 years of experience in educational publishing. For seven years, I managed publishing and operations for Lexia Learning Systems, Inc., an educational software and reading curriculum publisher. During my tenure at Lexia, I managed the overhaul of a special education reading curriculum and began to manage the development of a mainstream reading curriculum (until Lexia chose to exit paper publishing). For three years I managed publishing for The Writers’ Express, where my team developed a complete set of teacher guides and student workbooks for grades 3–8 that produced strong writing skills in classrooms. For four years I managed the development of digital ELA curriculum content for grades 6–8 for Amplify Education. The resulting daily lessons for students and instructional guides for teachers have produced improved test outcomes in reading and writing. Due to the above experiences, I have an understanding of educational publishing, from concept to publication. I also have experience writing and editing tightly controlled, leveled text — i.e., text that includes limited word types, sight words, vocabulary and sentence structure. One of the problems common to elementary readers is that they are either boring or include too many difficult words for their intended audience. I invented Treasure Hunt Books in order to overcome both problems. This is my second publishing start-up. During my first career in eating disorders, I self-published MAKING PEACE WITH FOOD, which I sold to Harper & Row (now HarperCollins) after many profitable print runs. That book is still in print in the U.S. and has been translated and published in 3 other countries. | |
