Art Law Conference 2023 aims to bring together students, attorneys, artists, arts & legal professionals to discuss contemporary & relevant topics at the intersection of art & law. The conference will promote discourse on artists rights, intellectual property, copyright, art contracts, negotiation & business tips, as well as anti-money laundering & art fraud.

Speakers will include attorneys & legal professionals from leading law firms in the United States & internationally; artists from diverse backgrounds in modern, contemporary & digital art; & arts professionals including appraisers. Each panel will include an attorney & an artist to dissect the varied subject matter at the intersection of art & law from different perspectives to elucidate artists rights, interest & protection. The panels will include a presentation & discussion from the speakers & conclude with a question & answer session with the audience to ensure interactive engagement.

Materials for the conference will include speaker slides & handouts with additional reading materials & resources. The subject matter will be directed for a general audience of students, arts professionals, & legal professionals. No experience or prior knowledge is necessary for the conference.

Attendance will be available both in-person & online to best serve our community members & patrons. Legal professionals & attorneys to receive Continued Legal Education credits & all attendees will enjoy networking & growth opportunities.

This conference is organized by the Center for Art Law in partnership with the Artist Representation Society (ARS), a student group at Fordham Law School that is dedicated to empowering the artistic community by providing access to legal education & resources at the intersection of law & the cultural sphere.This year, we will explore cutting edge topics in the field, including:

The Conference is hybrid & will be in-person at Fordham University School of Law & through Zoom. Online participants will receive a link closer to the date of the event.

1:30 PM - Panel 1: Artificial Intelligence & Copyright Issues in Art

Moderator: Ron Lazebnik, Director of the Samuelson-Glushko Intellectual Property & Information Law Clinic, Fordham University School of Law

Speakers: Amelia Brankov art law & copyright attorney at Brankov PLLC; Kelly McKernan, artist & representative in class action lawsuit against Midjourney/Stable Diffusion, & additional speakers announced shortly.

2:45 PM - Panel 2: Artist Contracts & Commission Agreements with Contemporary Art Institutions

Moderator: Carol Steinberg, attorney & Professor at the School of Visual Arts (SVA)

Speakers: Jill Magid, American performance-based artist in New York; Christopher Robinson, art law & intellectual property attorney at Rottenberg Lipman Rich & other speakers to be announced shortly.

Moderator: Philippa Loengard, Executive Director, Kernochan Center for Law, Media & the Arts at Columbia Law School

Speakers: Pierre Ciric, attorney & founding partner of the Ciric Law Firm, PLLC; Sophie Bala, Certified Financial Crime Specialist & Senior Director at VIDOCQ; & David Stier, Partner, DLA Piper.

Continuing Legal Education Credits: IS PENDING in accordance with the requirements of the New York State CLE Boards for a maximum of 3.0 Professional Practice (Approved for Non-Transitional & Transitional Attorneys) credits. Out-of-state attendees will have to apply to their states' CLE Board for credit. Please note that if you wish to receive CLE credit, you must purchase a legal professional ticket.
